From a Home Fix to an Etsy Bestseller: The Story Behind Our Shower Head Lowering Extension

Some of the best products start with a simple, personal problem. That’s exactly how our Shower Head Lowering Extension came to be — and its journey from a one-off home project to a design sold in over a thousand units tells a story worth sharing.
A Simple Problem at Home
The idea began with a practical need: my spouse, who is shorter than me, was struggling to comfortably and safely reach the shower head. Rather than replace the entire shower fixture or install a costly adjustable shower system, I decided to design and 3D print a small tool that could lower the shower head to a more accessible height.
The very first version of this tool was simple by design. It held the shower head in a single, lowered position — functional, but not flexible. If we ever wanted to return the shower head to its normal, higher position, the entire tool had to be removed by hand.
That original design is still available today as a free download on Printables.com, where makers with their own 3D printers can access and print it at no cost.
Solving the Next Problem: Switching Positions Easily
While the original tool solved the immediate accessibility issue, the removal step was inconvenient for everyday use. So I went back to the design and added a second slot — an upper position — allowing the shower head to be shifted back to its normal height without ever taking the tool off the shower arm.

This small design change made a big difference in usability. Instead of removing and reinstalling the extension every time someone needed a different height, the tool could now stay permanently in place. Users could simply move the shower head between the lower and upper slots depending on who was showering — a much more elegant and practical solution for households with people of different heights.
From a Home Project to an Etsy Shop
Friends who saw the tool installed in our own shower immediately recognized its everyday value. Their encouragement was the push we needed to make it available to a wider audience, and we listed it in our Etsy store shortly after.
The response exceeded our expectations. Since then, we’ve sold more than 1,000 units across multiple versions and colors, and the listings have collected over 200 customer reviews on Etsy — a strong signal that this small design solves a real, common problem in many households.

Why This Story Matters
This product’s evolution — from a single-position home fix, to a dual-position design, to a store-ready item with hundreds of happy customers — reflects the kind of iterative, user-driven design process we bring to everything we make at KayDee3D. We don’t just design for a spec sheet; we design for real problems, test them in our own home first, and refine them based on how people actually use them.
We’re proud that a tool built out of care for one person has now helped make showers more accessible for over a thousand households — and we’re excited to keep improving it as we hear from more customers.
